7 Things I Learned From the Martha Stewart Documentary

Sometimes, the hardest years teach us the most. Last year was one of the most challenging times for me, especially in terms of work and finances. I felt uninspired, demotivated, and generally uninterested in everything around me. Life felt like it was falling apart, and I couldn’t see a way out. Then, I stumbled upon Martha’s documentary, and it completely changed my perspective. Watching it was like hitting the reset button on my mindset. Now, I’m starting over, but this time with MUCH more confidence and a fresh attitude. Here are some life lessons I picked up along the way that you should too:

1. Be Limitless

Martha Stewart is undeniably one of the most inspiring people I’ve ever learned about. Her journey from being a model to becoming a stockbroker, and then one of the most influential celebrity chefs and TV personalities, is nothing short of extraordinary. She’s a shining example of ambition and reinvention. While many aspire to success, few achieve it at her level, and that’s what sets her apart. Starting as a babysitter, transitioning to modelling, marrying a lawyer, and ultimately building a billion-dollar empire. Her life is a testament to what’s possible when you’re determined.

2. Never Be Afraid to Reinvent Yourself

Martha Stewart proves that reinvention is not just possible—it’s essential. After her prison sentence, many thought it would end her career. But Martha had other plans. She returned stronger, wiser, and more unshakable than ever. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, she reclaimed her empire and solidified her legacy. Her journey is a powerful reminder that it’s not over till you decide it is. The setbacks are not the end; they’re an opportunity to rebuild and thrive. If Martha can turn such a significant challenge into a comeback, so can we!

3. Set High Standards

If there’s one thing I’m tired of hearing, it’s to compromise on standards. ALWAYS. I see so many women settling or being gaslit into thinking their standards are too high, which is rarely the case. Your standards are not the problem; people who can’t meet them are.

I once came across a quote about Martha Stewart that perfectly captures the essence of her success: “Stewart’s sense of purpose and insistence on high standards have been hallmarks of her career from the very beginning.” This statement rings true and brings home the point about never ever compromising on your “ridiculously high” standards.

4. Be Unapologetically You

One of the things I admire the most about her is how she embraces every part of herself—both her strengths and her flaws. She’s intelligent, ruthless, logical, demanding, and strategic—all qualities that make a woman a “bitch” but a man a savvy businessperson.

She loves a beautiful home but refuses to fit into the “Susie Homemaker” mold. Martha is unapologetically herself: cold, opinionated, and even mean at times, yet also ambitious,  beautiful, strong-willed, hardworking, and incredibly successful. She doesn’t pretend to be perfect or try to soften her edges to appease others, and that’s what makes her so captivating. Her honesty and refusal to conform are qualities we can all admire and learn from.

5. Learn Something New Every Day

Martha shared that she lives by one simple rule: learn something new every day. At first glance, it sounds easy, but in practice, it’s a constant challenge—and that’s exactly why it’s so powerful. This mindset keeps you curious, open, and constantly evolving. Whether it’s trying a new recipe, picking up a new hobby, or getting out of your comfort zone,  it’s a reminder that growth never stops. You’re never too old or too busy to embrace the thrill of learning. So, ladies, if you’re reading this, take Martha’s advice: never stop doing, thinking, and creating.

6. Have a Solution-Focused Mindset

Problems are inevitable, but how we approach them is what makes all the difference. Martha’s philosophy is refreshingly straightforward: “I never look the other way. I look at a problem and try to solve it.”

Note to self: instead of dwelling on challenges or letting them overwhelm you, channel your energy into finding solutions.

This mindset is empowering—it shifts your focus from what’s wrong to what can be done. By embracing a solution-focused approach, you not only tackle problems head-on but also build confidence in your ability to overcome anything life throws your way.

7. Pay Attention to Details

Whether it’s keeping a detailed diary of every meal she ate on her European honeymoon or being super attentive to the state of plants in her garden, her ability to notice and remember the small things is inspiring. It’s not just about being observant—it’s about appreciating the little details that often get overlooked.

This level of attentiveness fuels creativity sharpens problem-solving and even adds depth to your everyday experiences. Just by bringing awareness to the little things, we can all approach life with a deeper sense of connection.
